The pioneer of the Afrobeat genre, a blend of traditional Yoruba and Afro-Cuban music with funk and jazz genres, Fela used his music and lyrics to expose the Nigerian government. A dedicated Pan-Africanist, Fela urged Nigerians and those of African descent to denounce the Western values enforced by colonization, inspiring people all over the African diaspora to embrace their roots.
